Photography has always been a part of my life. Until fifth or sixth grade, my photography was just based on family events, not being skilled or pretty. Once I got to explore that side of the camera though, I haven't gone back.
On this page, I have a few different series of photos. Below, I will delve deeper into the meaning I see behind them and why I took them.
Playing With Light Series
1. The golden tungsten light I had turned on inspired me to take a photo that felt like the sun was shining in the night, a saving source of a bad day.
2. I wanted to expand on the first photo, and I wanted to change the angle. I don't much like this photo, but I love the process it shows while still not being a reject.
3. For this photo, I wanted to get the full body motion of my subject. This photo was a candid reaction to a statement made by another peer in the room. The look on her face to me is the containment of laughter and trying to remain composed.
4. In this shot, I wanted to move my light instead of the camera. To me, this photo gives the perfect vibe of what I want my photography to be and to look like: dramatic, beautiful, intense.
5. In this photo, I decided to play with editing to see if I could achieve a moonlight effect rather than the sunny-glow. I think this photo shows off the subjects mystery and how she is more than what meets the eye.
6. A 50mm lens, bright studio light and jokes went into this shot. I wanted to do a dramatic-pretty-eye shot for this one, and while I got a few of those that I didn't like, I got this one, a perfect manifestation of subject #2.
7. This photo feels like something out of a teenage murder mystery show. The subject posed just how I asked her to and my light had gotten pushed out of frame by a peer in the process, but I do enjoy the way it turned out.
Senior Matta
1. The my subject in this photo, last name Matta, laid down to get a photo of herself for social media, and I saw an opportunity for a beautiful shot. I picked her out of the background in color with Photoshop and she popped just how I wanted her to.
2. Wyoming snow is a trademark of Cody fall to spring, I used the slight breeze to blow Matta's hair with the beautiful background of the frozen lake.
3. When I turned Matta around, the lens flare I got made the shot dramatic and beautiful and this explains her personality. She is an amazing young woman and this photo has the essence of her all over it.
4. I wanted to add the colorized version of Matta's #1. I thought it would be important to compare, at least for myself.
5. Matta is a part of the color guard, and I wanted her to be able to showcase that in these photos. Many, many, many action shots led us to this one, both of our favorites.
Secret In The Book
This shot is of a book that one of my favorite actors wrote, I used the photo he had in the back and used a red accent handle to make it look like something secret.
Flowers
1. I had bought my mother flowers for her birthday, and I wanted to capture something for remembrance that wasn't too personal for social media.
2. I took this shot while on the road for my short film. I thought these flowers would be a gorgeous way for me to remember something so significant in my life.
3. Freshman year, I had a friend who gifted me a few roses, and while I didn't stick with the friend, the flower she gave me helped me to stick to photography.
4. This is another of the flowers I had used for my mother's birthday on social media, hoping not to get to personal. These posts have since been deleted in order for a re-brand but I wanted to keep the photos somewhere safe.
5. My younger sister always wants to have a photo-shoot. Our crab-apple tree gives the perfect place for this in the summer, and I love the angle of this one too.
Finals Stress
I took this shot, on my phone, in the middle of studying for finals, to make light of the situation for myself.
Traveling Back In Time
In speech and debate, it was always a bonding moment to read together, whether it was books for class, poetry, scripts or speeches we wrote ourselves. This was my last trip with the subject, as she moved out of town right after the meet, and this photo is a great memory of her.
Cinnamon Rolls and Coffee
I love the story behind this photo so much that every time I post it, it has the same caption. The people sitting at the bar on the end were talking to each other about the cinnamon rolls they could get from this quaint coffee shop, and whether or not they would stir their coffee with broken off strands, or their spoons.
Animals
1. Hank is a family friend's horse. For my entire life I have been afraid of horses because of their size. Hank was the first horse I got to ride and be acquainted with in a friendly way.
2. My eldest dog, Rosie, is a huge part of my life, and she spends most of her day on the back of the couch, sitting in the window, "protecting her people". She'll bark at just about anything, but she is the sweetest little dog we've ever owned.
For the last two categories, I won't break down each photo, just explain the grouping.
Landscapes
Wyoming is so gorgeous, the sights everywhere are beautiful, and I can't imagine getting such a love of photography anywhere else. These images all comprise of something important to me. From my red house with the bright snow to the lake where I found my love of film.
Senior Brantz
This senior has been a friend and acquaintance for many years, due to our close last names and class averages, we have spent many a day with each other. I wanted to take her senior photos this year so that she'd always have to remember high school with some fun. The day we spent taking these photos, while long, exhausting and a huge gas burner, were the closest we've ever been and it was exciting to be able to have this new adventure.
